The Ockenden Review has raised a number of immediate and essential actions for NHS Hospital Trusts to implement. A key area is the patient experience, one where the Ockenden and Amos reviews have highlighted key issues. Over the last four years, delivering the Family Psychological Support Service for families taking part in the Ockenden Review in Nottingham has provided us with unique insights into the challenges faced by families that have compounded their experience of trauma and led to harm, along with scrutiny and challenge for Trusts.
As a specialist psychotherapy provider, we bring our expertise and training in trauma, psychological processes and restoration together with significant experience of supporting families through a complex inquiry process, and the aftermath of harm caused during their involvement with maternity services.
Evidence shows the role of communication in exacerbating or mitigating trauma reactions in the event of difficult experiences and adverse outcomes. Improving the culture of maternity services and the patient experience is essential for restoring trust and improving outcomes.
"The service stands out in the health and care system by demonstrating a new and innovative way to provide support in a truly person-centred way."
